YAN LAB

Brand Design, App Design, 2021.

Challenge

Signboards and outdoor advertisements are the first visual impression when people are visiting the streets. A key aspect of Taipei's cityscape is complex signboards and outdoor advertisements. It is an expression of local life and culture.

Signboard became one of the reasons that make the cityscape of Taipei messy and chaotic, which is significantly impacted by the color choices and the materials of the signboards. Many are designed to be "anti-designed" through vibrant flashing color palettes and an overloaded typography usage to catch customers' attention. This project aims to create a better visual image for Taipei, elevate, and maintain its beauty.

Solution

Yan Lab is an institution dedicated to exploring and analyzing how color in the environment affect our everyday lives. We helped the city government construct aesthetic and practical strategies for the signboard regulation in Taipei.

Customize the specification by concerning the color use and materials of signages in each neighborhood, depending on the history and characteristics of the environment. We aim to educate citizens about color combinations for the signboards and advertisements, to enhance people's aesthetic consciousness.

The word YAN can mean both color and face in Mandarin. It is a perfect word for this institution, which's mission is enhancing the appearance (face) of the city by collecting and analyzing the colors.
